Busy Day

After shot

We had a full day yesterday!

I started out early in the morning by running (walking) the Race for the Cure. The original plan was to run but our preparations weren't the best so we ran down the hills and walked up them. We finished with a respectable time so we were happy....less than an hour. :)

We were totally impressed, though, with the more 'advanced' runners who finished the whole thing in 16 and 18 minutes. Wow!!

Now that is some fast running.

I think I could train all year and not run that fast.

It was fun still, and we hope to do some more. If you know of any good ones that are cheap (or even free!) let me know so we can add them to our calendar.

I rested after the race, and yesterday afternoon Michael and I .....

(drum roll please)....

took the kids to my moms to spend the night!!!

WOW!!!!

We haven't had an overnight sitter in, well, I can't remember when.

We were thrilled!!

Our friends, Kevin & Shelley, called Friday and offered us FREE! tickets to the Carolina game last night. Of course we wanted to go, but the challenge was finding a sitter.

Luckily, my mom was very excited to keep the kids overnight. Thank you Mimi, Pop, Bobby & KK for letting them stay!!

Michael and I thoroughly enjoyed our time hanging out with the Arrowoods and seeing the ballgame.

Now, I do love to go to a Carolina game. We go to several each year.

But I have to admit, I am not the fan that Shelley is. This girl could hang with the football crazed men!! She knows her stuff. :)

I'm sure Kevin appreciates this about her!

So, I'm taking in the game and really am enjoying it all. But I just don't think my thoughts were the same as Shelley's.

For instance,

Shelley says a friend of a friend tried out to be Cocky when they were in school. She said you have to sign an agreement that you won't tell anyone who you are if you are chosen to be Cocky.

So.....if you are chosen, you are obviously a huge football fan. What in the world kind of excuse do you come up with to explain to your friends that you never attend a football game??? Wouldn't they start to wonder why you disappear every weekend??

And what kinds of abilities are required of Cocky? What does a 'Cocky tryout' involve?

When you're finished 'being Cocky' are you then allowed to make your identity known?

AND....

Since there are 2 different squads of cheerleaders, one wearing garnet and one wearing white, how do they decide who is on which squad?

Or do both squads have both colors of uniforms and they alternate?

And why in the world did UAB only have 4 visible cheerleaders? Did the other ones not want to come? I'd say keep them all at home if you can only afford to send 4!!!

And why are there kids who are surely in high school walking around highly intoxicated and the policemen are merely glancing there way without caring???

And there sure are some cute outfits with garnet and black that these chicks have come up with. But some of them need to be reminded that Carolina is not RED!

Anyway, like I said, Shelley kept up with the game....penalties, score, and all.

Rhonda made note of what she'd like to wear to the next game and came up with lots of questions about everything else in the game!! :)

BTW, if you can shed any light on any of these....I'd love to hear it!! ;)

In the end it was a great time had by all....THANK YOU!!! Kevin and Shelley for the great evening. It was beyond wonderful to get out and spend some adult time with good friends and each other.

Are You Ready for Some Football?

Saturday was the first game of Upward Flag Football season at our church. Jake has been sooo excited about football season. He practices almost every day outside, and he prefers it if it is raining. I have NO idea where that came from.
Did he watch football players on tv in the rain or something? Not sure. But the wetter it is, the better. He will ask on the way home, "Mom, is the grass wet today?" Because if it is....you'd better bet he's planning on a game!!

And he has to get all decked out to play. Full football attire is required.

Stretching the muscles :)

He wanted a shot of him throwing the ball!

Soaked and completely loving it!
So anyway, flag football officially started up on Saturday. I gave in and let Ella Kate sign up for cheerleading this year. Probably not my one of my best ideas. You'll see why!

Pre-Game

With Coach Daddy

Running through the "tunnel"
Braeden and Brycen
Melissa runs to keep up - what a good sport!
Uncle Brad and the team - Jake is number 4
Jake, Brynn, Ella Kate

Meanwhile, over at the girls' camp...
This is what most of the cheerleaders are doing...

This is what Ella Kate is doing...

But she looks cute while doing it...right?

Okay, I'll smile a little if Karson cheers beside me!!

Karson is the coach, Ms. Summer's, daughter and Ella Kate is her mini-me.

Ella Kate eventually joined in on the cheering just a tad. But only after Ms. Summer bribed her with her end of the game snack. My girl will do most anything for a little food!! :)

Jake did score a touchdown so he was pretty pleased, even though it wasn't the "15 scores" that he originally planned to make.

Mimi, Nana, Dave, and Caleb all came out to watch their first game together, so they were very excited to see them there!!

We'll see how next week goes!

Birthday Night

Friday night was birthday night for us! We celebrated 2 birthdays in our family - my brother turned 17 on the 17th and our nephew, Caleb, turned 12 on the 19th. We had birthday dinner with Bobby and cake and icecream with Caleb.

Zoo Trip

On our way back from the beach a few weeks ago, we stopped by Riverbanks Zoo for the annual zoo trip. I think we've gone every year since Jake was born, including the year he was a baby and had no clue what an animal was and couldn't care less that he was "seeing" so many of them!

Aren't all 'kid' trips when they're young just for us parents anyway? You remember, when your firstborn was a baby, you were soooo excited to be doing all the 'kid' events like the zoo, the park, Halloween, Santa Claus, etc, etc.

I remember thinking with Jake, "Why ARE we doing this again?" "Does he even care that he is getting candy in that plastic pumpkin?" "OH! Yes! Daddy and I have a little sweet tooth that this will satisfy for the next several months!!" :)

Anyway, back to the zoo.

The kids enjoy the zoo more every year. This year they were so excited from the moment they heard about the trip. Here is a 'picture-story' of the day....

Is this the lizard that pooped in our bed at the beach??? The kids were anxious to know! :)

(More on that story in the actual beach post)

(And YES I know it's probably some elaborate species and not a true-blue lizard!)

Watching the zoo worker lady do something with the rocks in the aquarium. It looked strangely like stirring them up. Is that something they do? And for good reason??

Nevertheless, the kids enjoyed watching her do it.
These guys have to be pretty just to make up for the wretched smell they put off. One poor little girl told her mom she wasn't going NEAR those stinky animals.
Ella Kate watches the penguins swim.
These are REAL! Aren't they pretty? Probably my favorite part. I just don't remember seeing them in the past. We probably skipped this building because we thought it looked boring. That's what we get!! They were just beautiful!
Jake peeps from the tree
Ella Kate finally gets brave and rides a fake animal. She wouldn't have anything to do with the previous ones.
Mom and the babies

Llama, Llama, Red Pajama
or the new version
Llama, Llama, Mad at Mama

Jake feeds...umm...a goat maybe?
Are you serious???? The 3D Spongebob Movie is your FAVORITE part of the zoo???
Sheesh!!
Ella Kate and the Tiger (Bobby's Clemson Tiger!)
The very muddy elephant

Jake rides the elephant.
I have his picture on this same one every year since he was a babe.

Ella Kate and daddy
Jake feeds the giraffe. The nice lady at the food station asked Jake if he fed the giraffe it's 'special food.' He said, "No, I fed it some salad." Don't try to pass a bowl of lettuce off on my kid as something special. Even if you do charge $1 for a handful!
Probably the second favorite part. My kids are a little obsessed with alligators.

The infamous gorilla. He is the funniest act there!

Walking through the bird cave.
Jake touches the HUGE turtles!
Ella Kate touches the turtles. She really wanted to touch the snakes but no touching allowed there!!
Jake and the pretend turtle
All in all, a great day.
